Hawkes Bay Towing

Rod Naylor started Hawkes Bay Towing 25 years ago.

“It was initially started to help service an existing paint and panel shop and has grown from there. We have slide decks, hiab trucks, low loaders and heavy salvage trucks, and we deliver all over the North Island.”

How was the workflow previously managed?

“Before MyTrucking, we used another transport system that we implemented with the intention of going away from a paper-based system. This was 10 years ago. We also used diaries.”

What issues needed to be resolved?

“We found that our old system did not allow us to go completely paperless. We wanted to get away from all paper.

“Paper created a huge bottleneck with invoicing, required more admin work, and we double handled information. We needed a system that used a mobile app that was easy to use for drivers without a lot of IT awareness.

“It had to be able to hold all the information we required for jobs, and have the ability for drivers to take pictures of damage to vehicles, without any issues. Our dispatchers – who also worked as drivers from time to time – needed to easily add and send jobs to drivers while on the road.

“It was also important that whatever system we used had to be cloud-based so that we could work remotely when required.”

The Solution

Hawkes Bay Towing joined MyTrucking in October 2019

Before

  • Heavily paper-based
  • Time spent phoning and texting every single job to drivers
  • Often forgot about adding jobs when back in the office
  • Had to be in the office to operate the business effectively

After

  • Pretty much paper-free now
  • Jobs all go through the mobile app, instantly notifying drivers
  • Dispatchers add jobs through the mobile app while on the go
  • Cloud-based, and can just about operate from anywhere

Why MyTrucking?

“We’d heard good things about it – from drivers as well – which is always a good endorsement.

“It’s a company that was started – and is based in – New Zealand.”

How easy was it switching to MyTrucking?

“Setting up MyTrucking was very simple. It was important that moving to MyTrucking did not cause us huge headaches with the change over. Working with a New Zealand-based company, that helped us through this process, was great.”

What are the key benefits that MyTrucking provides?

“On top of what I’ve already mentioned, being based in the cloud has been a great asset during the COVID-19 restrictions, as our admin staff have been able to easily work from home along with drivers, with no issues at all.”

Where has MyTrucking helped most?

“The speed at which we can invoice our customers now is great.

“Now we don’t worry about jobs not being invoiced or forgotten about.”
