Truck Week Australia: Celebrating the people behind our freight

Celebrating Truck Week Australia

Truck Week Australia is a chance to pause and recognise the people behind the freight. The drivers starting before dawn, the dispatchers reshuffling runs at 6am, and the office teams cleaning up paperwork long after trucks are parked.

MyTrucking is highlighting three inspirational stories of these hardworking people. Their systems have led to greater efficiencies, less stress and a better service for their customers. Learn, in their words, how they made this happen.

Story #1. Staying cool when time pressure hits

In Queensland’s Western Downs, Quarry Mining Haulage (QMH) grew quickly and, like many transport businesses, they were trying to manage scheduling and job completion with spreadsheets and paper dockets.

They needed a more efficient transport management system (TMS).

The challenge wasn’t just admin. It was the time delays. Paperwork could be missing, and if trucks weren’t back to the yard, dockets could take up to two weeks to return.

Manager Piet Rycks shares where MyTrucking has helped the most:

“Everywhere!! In the office, being able to add jobs and invoice quicker saves us so much time.”

That’s the part people outside the industry don’t always see: the “freight task” doesn’t start and finish on the road, it’s also the pressure inside the office.

And when drivers are supported with clearer job information, it changes their day too:

“The drivers like the program because they can see what jobs they are doing in advance and have all the information they require at their fingertips.”

Piet shares more in Quarry Mining Haulage (QMH)’s video.

Story #2. “We were spread pretty thin” and how they fixed it

For a lot of Australian transport operators, “team” doesn’t mean huge departments. It usually means a small office crew who do everything. Often, it’s family.

Pittman Transport, MyTrucking’s first Australian customer, is an inter-generational business with over a century of history. They cart cement, lime and fly ash using pneumatic (pressure) tanks across multiple states with a fleet of 24 trucks.

Jeremy Pittman describes a common workload in small offices:

“There’s only three of us in the office — myself, my wife and our Operations Manager and we were spread pretty thin. We were looking to streamline things.”

The risk wasn’t only time, it was errors due to some of their manual processes:

“It was pretty standard for the time, but it was labour intensive. It also left us open to stuff ups, dockets getting lost, that sort of thing.”

Coordination, communication and admin play a vital role in freight moving reliably. Jeremy and the team embraced MyTrucking and the office hasn’t run the same since:

“From a management side, having that information almost instantly and having a breakdown of revenue, invoicing – it’s all there in front of you. You’re not left wondering anymore.”

Jeremy shares more in Pittman Transport’s video.

Story #3. Changing systems to reduce workflow headaches

Another hidden role in trucking is the behind-the-scenes coordination from teams working at different locations.

In Victoria, Kim Bish works remotely as a bookkeeper and logistics manager for multiple freight businesses.

She describes the traditional workflow many relate to:

“Spreadsheet, all manual. There seemed to be a lot of double handling, for sure, and when you double handle figures and booking numbers, mistakes are more easily made.”

When she started using MyTrucking what changed wasn’t just efficiency, it was clarity:

“Because I work from home, MyTrucking is a lot easier in that they upload their weigh bridge dockets straight into the system, and I can see that and bill it out.”

Providing employees with tools like MyTrucking helps streamline their work. It also contributes to higher levels of job satisfaction. Happy staff, happy customers.

Celebrate your people

Across Australia, transport stories are varied but the common thread is always people.

This Truck Week, if you’re in the industry: take a moment to recognise your people. From drivers, dispatchers, admin teams, workshop crews, and the families who support them.

Happy Truck Week from all of us at MyTrucking!

If you want to support your people the same way as Piet, Jeremy and Kim, we welcome you to see how MyTrucking works with a free demo.
