E.D Swain Ltd is a transport operation based 30 minutes south of Christchurch in Dunsandel. Offering rural cartage including livestock and general cartage, rural contracting, grass silage and hay baling services, they’re a small but busy team who’ve been in the business for over 36 years. Alongside E.D.Swain Ltd, they now run Amuri Transport, based in Culverden.
The family-owned and operated business was founded by Eddie and Sandra Swain, who hail from farming and transport backgrounds. The duo purchased their first truck in 1987, a 1970 Mercedes Benz LK 1418, and it’s been full throttle ever since.
The trucking side of the business has now grown to a fleet of six Scania’s, five full-time drivers with a focus on carting livestock and a bit of flat deck cartage. It’s a true family affair with Eddie and Sandra running the day-to-day management of the business, daughter Anna working in the office, son Brad working as a truck driver and other son Stephen working on the contracting side of things.
In 2006, the business expanded to include some contracting services when Eddie realised he needed a more reliable service for his own farming operation. He purchased a baler and before long people started requesting that he do their balage contracting as well. In 2015 the business expanded again with the purchasing of a local contracting business. So it’s safe to say, this team don’t sit idly on their laurels!
With so many moving parts to keep the entire business enterprise running smoothly, they quickly realised their paper-based system wasn’t going to cut the mustard and they started researching alternative ways to manage things.
