Dellavedova Fertilisers

Dellavedova Fertilisers

Family owned and operated, Dellavedova Fertilisers has been committed to providing Central Victorian farmers and horticulturalists with the right advice, products and services since 1967.

They work with customers to achieve target yields through fertiliser planning and application, in crop monitoring and harvesting the final product.

Chris Dellavedova is the third generation to work in the business. He says core business is fertiliser sales, with two depots, one in Ballarat and the other in Maryborough, where the main office is. “We have a fert dispatching arm, spreading trucks and recently put a B-Double freight truck on the road, freighting our own fert, lime and gypsum primarily.”

The majority of the fertiliser is sold direct to the farmer, but the business also spreads a small amount of the product it sells, with large amounts of lime and gypsum spread in the summer months.

How was the workflow previously managed?

The old system was paper-based and scheduling was done on whiteboards.

“We used to waste a lot of time getting jobs scheduled and sorting out jobs in the office. Now, the driver’s app gives us the flexibility for the drivers to take control of the jobs they are doing. The driver rings the customer, organises his day and gets the jobs done.”

The Solution

Before

  • Paper-based and whiteboard scheduling = time consuming
  • Double handling of information
  • Time wasted communicating jobs to drivers each day

After

  • Less time spent scheduling and communicating with drivers
  • Faster invoicing
  • More transparent and accurate invoicing
  • Not tied to the desk – Chris is able to drive a truck and help run their business at the same time.

Why MyTrucking?

“David Rogers was one of the first to take MyTrucking on. He sub-contracts for us and I saw MyTrucking initially through his drivers and thought we could make it work for us. I did my own research and went from there.”

How easy was it switching to MyTrucking?

“The initial set-up is so easy it’s actually ridiculous. Because we used hand written docket books we needed to be able to put it into reality in a short space of time. Being able to use our own information and customers for the demo really helped. It makes a big difference for the uptake with the drivers if they are using real data.

“It’s like anything, once you start using it there’s a million things you think of that you could add. That’s one thing I would say, MyTrucking are very good at taking on your ideas and, if something can be done about it, it’s done. That’s a big selling point, it was for me.”

Where has MyTrucking helped most?

“At the end of the day, it has aided the business to become more streamlined and efficient.

“The biggest thing is, in this industry, it narrows up your invoicing time and you can invoice so quickly. You need to be able to do that.

“Everyone knows what they are doing and it’s up to the drivers to make it happen. It allows me to drive a truck and do the admin job too. For an owner-operator, from that point of view, it’s a bit of a no-brainer.”

What are the key benefits that MyTrucking provides?

  • Providing accurate and transparent records of work done, which flows into invoicing.

“We can be doing five loads per truck out of our depots in a day. With lime and gypsum in summer we used to have to charge by the hour due to a number of factors, including the limitation in accuracy in the paper trail – the driver is out on farm all day. Now, we can charge more accurately because drivers know exactly how much has been spread. This gives greater transparency with invoicing for customers.”

  • Easy and simple communication with drivers by using the mobile app.

“The drivers use the app, it’s brilliant. We used to have drivers come into the office at 7.30am every morning and wait to find out what they were doing for the day. Each driver had wasted half an hour before they even got started. Our drivers now know what they are doing the night before, making them more efficient from the get go in the morning, that time saving alone is huge.”

“I’m in a truck myself, so I don’t have time to sit around telling the drivers what to do, and they don’t like that either. I like that you have the ability to tailor it to the driver’s needs and requirements. You can control the level of responsibility they have, if you wanted to. We are fortunate to have very loyal and great staff.”
