Women are behind the wheel, behind the scenes, and behind the screens in the transport industry. They keep freight moving and family businesses alive. Still, their voices often go unheard. This International Women’s Day, we’re shining a light on three women who drive the transport industry forward, with the help of MyTrucking. They’re dispatchers, business owners and caregivers.
Why International Women’s Day matters
Today we highlight women’s achievements and call for faster progress on gender equality.
In transport, women are still under-represented, making up a small share of the global transport workforce. At the same time, more women are stepping into roles across driving, management and ownership – often while juggling family commitments too.
Here’s a snapshot of where things stand:
- New Zealand: Women make up 6% of the truck driving workforce (as of 2023).
- Australia: In operational transport and logistics roles, female participation has grown from 15.1% in 2004 to 18.9% in 2024, and about 5.5% of truck drivers (as of 2024).
- UK: Women make up about 20% of transport sector staff overall, but only 1–3% of HGV drivers (as of 2025).
Spotlight #1: Backing yourself in business – Ayna Amina, NZ
Leaving her nursing career at 19 to start Angel Transport with her dad was a big decision for Ayna Amina, but she never doubted it. From three trucks in 2005, the business now runs 38 vehicles across Auckland and the North Island.
Ayna works across dispatch, payroll, accounts, customer service and sometimes driving.
“The specialty of our business is that we are not signed into contracts with customers. Every day is a new day and we don’t know what will happen. All the trucks run on an hourly rate,” she explains.
“The simplicity of MyTrucking has given us a lot of freedom and time to work on other parts of the business,” she says. “I can send a POD from my phone in my lounge, that’s how simple it is.”
Ayna has also brought increased visibility to women in transport, winning multiple awards.
She received the Outstanding Contribution by a Woman in the Road Transport Industry award at the New Zealand Road Transport Industry Awards in 2019. And recently Ayna was nominated at Transporting New Zealand’s 2025 North Island Road Freight Industry Awards.
Spotlight #2: Keeping farms moving – Tamarra Cowan, AUS
At Arkle Farms, large-scale agricultural logistics meet smart technology. As the admin officer for Arkle Logistics, Tamarra Cowan manages cropping, cattle and freight movements from more than 3,000 kilometres away in Queensland.
Tamarra’s ability to coordinate complex operations remotely shows how innovation is transforming the future of rural transport. Using MyTrucking as their chosen transport management system (TMS), Tamarra keeps the business running smoothly.
“I don’t know how we could do it without MyTrucking,” she says. “I use it daily – running reports on truck income, farm deliveries and product movements.”
In just three years, Tamarra has gone from novice to MyTrucking company expert. “It’s been a massive help, especially with scheduling.” she explains.
Spotlight #3: Championing rural England – Corina Mee, UK
In rural England, C.F.MEE Haulage has been moving grain and building strong relationships for generations.
Corina Mee is at the centre of it all. She’s a planner, accounts manager, grandmother and long-time MyTrucking advocate. Corina handles everything from dispatch to invoicing and compliance.
Before MyTrucking, C.F.MEE Haulage relied on paper diaries, whiteboards and constant phone calls: “It worked, but it was time-consuming and easy to miss things,” she says.
Now, “I can plan a full day’s work in minutes,” Corina explains. “It’s just so easy to use… It does what we need, and it saves us time every day.”
Corina has a willingness to embrace change, leading to a more efficient operation. She’s a great example of how women continue to drive progress across rural communities.
Backing women in transport
Ayna, Tamarra and Corina’s stories highlight how women are shaping the future of transport. When transport businesses offer a supportive working environment, combined with the right tools, they gain safer fleets, calmer days and stronger customer relationships.
Transport management software, like MyTrucking, gives back precious time for what matters – whether that’s looking after your team or getting home a little earlier. See how MyTrucking works.
